Team Speed Queen Takes You Where The Pros Train

Tour of Gila LogoWould you like to test your legs on the routes of one of the toughest Stage Races in the country? Would you like to see what roads in the US the Pros train on to prepare for the Tour De France? Have you ever wanted to ride at altitude to see what it is like? Have you ever wanted to try your hand at long, technical descents? Are you registered for the GranFondo and would like more opportunity to train with a group on challenging climbs and breathtaking descents? Have you wanted to explore the wild southwest on your bicycle?

This is your chance! Join Team Speed Queen from September 15th until 20th to experience a training camp on the very same roads that the Team Garmin/Transitions Team uses to prepare for the Tour de France . This will provide everyone with great training in an absolutely stunning area at a time of year when you can truly kick back and enjoy some long miles in the saddle. The weather should be perfect - comfortable temps with cool evenings. This would be excellent preparation for the GranFondo, and would allow you to get an edge with some long miles at altitude. We are limiting spots to ensure each client receives the maximum benefit from training with our coaches.

Arrive Wednesday afternoon into the Tucson airport where you will be transported to your clean, quiet room at the Holiday Inn. Centrally located, the Holiday Inn is one of the major sponsors of the Tour of the Gila Stage Race. Dinner will be in Tucson.

Thursday morning have a hot breakfast at the hotel with the group and meet up with your professionally assembled bicycle. Grab some prepared bottles from the iced cooler and you are on your way. Today’s route is the Inner Loop, 85 miles, and over 5,000 feet of climbing. A bagged lunch will be waiting upon your return and dinner will be a delicious and nutritious home cooked meal. The evening’s discussion will include training techniques and preparation, race day preparation, hydration and nutrition.

Tour of Gila ClimbingFriday’s route will take us over the 17 mile climb of Emory Pass to the town of Truth or Consequences. The total mileage will be 75 miles to near 9,000 feet, with a total of over 6,000 feet of climbing. We will have lunch on the road and return via van to Silver City. Tonight’s dinner will be a wonderful home-cooked meal to ensure you have excellent nutrition to both recover from today’s ride and prepare for tomorrow’s gut buster. Tonight’s discussion will include preparing a yearlong training plan, bike fit, utilizing training tools, and planning your off season.

Saturday’s ride will be the infamous Mogollon Route. This 73 mile route will include the 13 mile Mogollon climb and is sure to leave you with much respect for the contestants of the Tour of the Gila. This will be a one way ride, with a van waiting to bring you back to your hotel room in Silver City. Tonight’s dinner is on your own. We will provide you with a list of some of the excellent restaurants to chose from in the downtown area.

Sunday’s ride is nicknamed the “Gila Monster”. This seemingly benign, 65 mile route will include an out and back to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, as well as over 8,000 feet of climbing. Another early dinner will await us upon our return. While we wrap up the camp with questions and answers, your bicycle will be professionally packed for your departure out of the Tucson airport Monday morning.
