Spin into 2011 with Daily Coaching and Sunny Miles on the Big Island

  • Start the 2011 cycling season different this year by cycling in the warmth, beauty and peacefulness of Hawaii. Join Team Speed Queen on the Big Island from December 27, 2010 to January 2, 2011 for a Winter Training Camp in sunny Kona, Hawaii. Ride daily with Team Speed Queen’s coaches, receiving on the bike coaching as you explore the varied terrain of the Big Island. Ride the World Championship Ironman course as well as the infamous Saddle Back Road from Kona to Hilo over Mauna Loa Volcano. Return home fit, tan, and with new training techniques and riding skills to make 2011 a stellar cycling year. We are limiting the camp size in order to provide one on one availability of our coaches to our clients so don't delay.

    You will arrive in Kona on December 27th, ready to enjoy sunshine and mild temperatures. We will meet you at the Kona International Airport and deliver you to your condo overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. As a Professional Mechanic assembles your bicycle for you, watch the sea turtles frolic in the waves beneath your bedroom window. Head out for a short 15 mile ride to acclimate yourself to the warm temperatures and laid back island life. Return to a home-cooked dinner of local fare while watching the beautiful sunset.

    Tuesday will be a 55 mile ride north on the Island and will include sag support and lunch on the road. The evening will include a discussion on nutrition and training tools and includes another delicious and nutritious home-cooked meal.

    Wednesday will include a 70 mile ride north into Waimea Valley and the Town of Waimea for lunch before returning to Kona for another wonderful home cooked meal. The evening discussion will include fit, equipment choices, clothing options, as well as a discussion on hydration.

    Thursday you will be given the choice between a long or a shorter ride option, depending on your level of fatigue. The afternoon will include a trip to the local farmer’s market and some of the fabulous beaches where swimming with dolphins and sea turtles are the norm. Dinner is on your own tonight – chose from one of the many fabulous restaurants, all within walking distance of your condo!

    Friday is the Ride of all Rides, from Kona to Hilo, a seemingly short 87 miles with 14,000 feet of climbing. There will be plenty of support along the way, with pick-up and drop-off options. The van ride back from Hilo is stunning with waterfalls and rain forests offering postcard perfect photo opportunities. Enjoy your New Year’s Eve dinner out on the town. You will be able to enjoy the New Year’s Eve fireworks from your lanai or you can easily walk into downtown Kona and join in the celebration.

    Beaches of HawaiiYour first day of 2011, Saturday, will be spent enjoying a morning ride out to the northern tip of the Big Island for lunch, followed by an afternoon drinking in the sunshine, relaxing on the stunning white sand beach, and saying good-bye to the friends you have made during the camp. A final home cooked meal wraps up the perfect training vacation – feeding your body as well as your soul. Your bike will be professionally packed and awaits your departure Sunday January 2nd.

    After breakfast on Sunday, January 2nd we will bring you back to the airport, refreshed, fit, and ready to put A NEW SPIN IN 2011.

    What a wonderful way to spend the end of the year, away from the crowds in a tropical environment and improving your cycling technique! The cost of this amazing training clinic is $160/person/day/double occupancy. This includes housing (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condos with washer/dryer), professional assembly and re-packing of your bike for transport, breakfast for seven days, lunch for six days, and dinner for five days, bars, gels, bottles, snacks. It also includes airport transportation and mechanical support. It does not include airfare, alcoholic beverages, tips, shipping of your bike or excess baggage.     Is this camp right for you? You must have a road bike in good condition with suitable gearing (either a triple, compact set-up with a minimum of a 27 on the rear cassette). You must be able to ride at an average of 15-17 MPH on flat terrain, and climb for over 30 minutes at a time. You should have done at least a metric century in the past six months.
